Question by jessica: Answer for my biggest weakness?
For a retail interview I’m pretty sure I will be asked about my greatest strength and weakness. For strength I’m going to say it’s my ability to communicate effectively and for weakness I’m going to say that I had an eye for design but always had trouble laying it out on paper but taking an art class helped me overcome that issue. (I’m going to mention that I love creativity when she asks about me) so are those strong enough answers? Or is the art part completely irrelevant for a job like this?

Many interviewers now hide this type of question inside a behavioral question. For example, they will ask “tell me about a time that you were able to overcome a specific challenge and how you did it” or they may ask “tell me about a time that you struggled with something”. They will be looking for a specific answer in the form of:
– Situation
– Task
– Action
– Result
You can also tell them that you have worked on completing training on your own. There are a number of web sites that offe retail training. www.retailertrainingservices.com is one. They even hae a free one!

I have an interview tomorrow. I feel like saying “I work too hard” or I’m “too detail oriented” is too obvious and common. Are there any other good answers?

I know you are supposed to turn a weakness into a positive, but are there really weaknesses thast could affect the way one works that you would want to share? Any help on what to say would be greatly appreciated.

I hate that question. But I usually try to be honest to a point. As long as your weakness doesn’t directly disqualify you for the job to which you’re applying, be forward about it. My weakness is working in a team environment. Which is something a lot of employers are looking for. So, I just say the truth, and add a little embelishment. “My biggest weakness is working in a team environment where not every one is doing their share. I often don’t know just how to handle the situation.” See?
