Question by peatuhacs: I got terminated from old my job and now looking for a new job. Please help!?
I got terminated from my old job as a geological software support geologist 6 months ago. I was in my old job for about a year and a half. The reason for my termination was poor performance. There are 2 reasons for my poor performance.
1) Although I like geology and I am a geologist I did not really enjoy working in a customer service kind of enviroment. My old job was more like helping clients troubleshoot the problems they had with the geological software that my previous employer creates and sells to the clients. Having said that, I did like some aspect of the job: using the software to build geological models, helping other people once in a while, traveling etc. And I did try to see the positive side of the job although I wish I could actually use the software to work with geological models rather than teach someone else (clients) how to use the software.
2) I was dealing with some personal issues at the time of my termination. I had issues I needed to deal with regarding my sexuality and I knew that it was affecting my performance at work. At one point, I told work about my issues and HR arranged for me to meet with a counselor on a regular basis which I did.
One day my issues got hold of me and I decided to not come to work. I call my boss and let me know and he was fine with it. But then I also stayed away from work the next two days without letting my boss knows. and that triggered the termination.
So the two main causes of poor performances were: not really happy with job and having personal issues that were affecting my performance. In the end I got fired.
Now I am trying to apply for new jobs in the oil and gas industry and also related fields like mining and exploration but I don’t know what to do. I have lost confidence in myself and I dwell on my termination. I have updated my resume but I am scared if they interviewer ask me about my old job and why I left. I don’t know what to say and how to tackle this. Should I tell the truth and say I was terminated for poor performance? and if so how could I still make the interviewer believe that I still have the potential to be a good, reliable employee dispite my job termination. Should I just don’t include the job in my resume?
Any advice would be appreciated. I really need a job and I want to be able to succeed in my future job applications regardles of having been terminated for poor performance.
Hear from you soon.

Tell the truth at JOB INTERVIEW, not on the resume or cover letter, because if you do, you will not get interviews. Leave out bad and focus on good. If asked at an interview, you MUST tell the truth because if you lie and they find out, you will be terminated for that.
