I agree, it sounds like they want to see if you’ll fit in.

1. Be comfortable. Dress professional but that probably doesn’t me a suit and tie.

2. Have questions. Ask about the average number of years it takes to graduate, where are graduates now, what school did the dean/professor go to, what path did they take to their current job, etc.

3. Be polite. Don’t interrupt them or ask too many questions. Say “Thank you” at the end and shake his/her hand.

4. Take notes. It shows you are interested.

5. Misc – don’t fidget, make eye contact, and be careful with humor.

Good luck

It’s never too late to get a free student scholarship. If you have several scholarship search engines, you’ll realize that there are scholarships year around to apply for with the bulk of them between the fall and late winter. You can always get a scholarship. Hopefully, you have better luck than me when it comes to them. (Seriously, I just lost a large scholarship because I finished 2nd out of 1500+). Good luck!

Any ideas on Library Volunteering Interview?

Question by Mariah Adams: Any ideas on Library Volunteering Interview?
I’m getting interviewed to volunteer at my library…and I’m nervous.

Any ideas on how to answer questions like “What are your strengths?” “Why do you want to work here?” etc.

Any sample answers, so I can get my thoughts organized? I’m just feeling really jittery.

I can tell you what not to say. Don’t say you want to do something with computers, and don’t say you like to read. Everyone says that.

Realize that they will probably have you working away from people, maybe fixing books or sorting donations or shelving books.

It takes special training and skill to use the computer systems and they won’t have you do that, especially because it takes jobs away from other people.

You can talk about how you feel libraries are important in the community and you want to be part of that. For strengths, you can talk about what we call specialty areas – if you know about certain authors or certain subject areas. Organizational skills are good.

Remember, this is a volunteer position, not a regular job, so it’s not nearly as formal. They will want to know you hours and that you are really willing to make a commitment. One of the biggest headaches is planning on volunteers who don’t show up. So if you are in school, let them know how you will balance school and library work if they ask. Let them know you are willing to learn and do anything the library needs you to do. Being able to lift heavy stuff is good and being able to get down to the bottom shelves is also good.
