What would you do if you were in my place? Please read and answer. I know its long but im in a tough position.?

Question by Tammy: What would you do if you were in my place? Please read and answer. I know its long but im in a tough position.?
So my daughter is 15 but is in 8th grade, going into 9th when summer starts next week. She is at an upper class private school but we can only afford it because of a scholarship the school gave to us. My husband teaches at a community college but the college is facing financial trouble and might drop his department. Anyways, the scholarship is supposed to be private but i think just about everyone in the whole school knows about it. I was at a school play with my daughter on thursday night and when it was over, this woman walked over to me and asked if i was Tamera. I told her yes. She introduced herself as Jennifer Fitch and then went on to tell me that she had asked the school if they knew anyone who was qualified to be a secretary in a law office. Apparently the school told her i needed a job and was qualified as a secretary because i used to handle sorting the school lunch orders and taking them to the vendors. The school didn’t tell her about the job though. She said she was a lawyer and her personal secretary was moving away and she was looking for a new one. She asked me if i was interested and my husband told her i was. She basically told me when i had to come in for a formal interview if i wanted the job. It was at 10 the next morning. Then her husband walked over carrying their daughter, Maddy, who is in my daughters class and got one of the lead rolls my daughter auditioned for in the play, piggy back. My daughter, Melody said hi to her and she just rolled her eyes and looked at her iphone to answer a text. I went in the next morning at 9:45 and Jennifer didnt even show up until 10:30. When she got there, she didnt appologize or anything but she said Maddy had gotten no sleep the past few weeks getting ready for the play and she had to take her to the doctor. We up to her office and she told me what the job involved. She told me all i would do was answer the phone, set up appointments, and work with one of her paralegals with sorting paperwork. She told me she was one of 3 partners in the firm and there were 6 other attorneys, 9 paralegals, and 3 secretaries in the firm. Then she did the usual interview things. I told her that i had 3 daughters and one son. I told her that my son and one of my daughters has autism and that the other 2 daughters attend the same school as her daughter. That was all i thought she needed to know but she started asking me about what my kids like to do and then she asked where i live. I told her then asked her why she needed to know and she told me if i got the job, i would have access to highly confidential and she needed to know she could trust me so i asked her about her family. It was a mistake because she went on for about 15 minutes telling me about Maddy and how wounderful of a girl she is. Now to me this is a lie because i know her daughter is a partier, is popular, snobby, and very rude to Melody. Then she told me all about her husbands job as the CFO of the company he works for. Then she told me they live in Tuscan Hills, which ive been to before and i dont think any of the houses there are worth less that several million. She told me she thought i was the one for the job and i could have it if i improved my image a bit. I asked her what she meant and she said i needed an appropriate haircut, i need to dye my hair to hide the gray spots, and she said i needed to improve my wardrobe just a little. I said I had to talk it over with my husband so she said she would have someone from her office call me in the next several days to ask if i wanted the job. Then a client showed up so she showed me out and went back to her office.

My husband really wants me to take the job because he is sure he is about to get laid off but i think Jennifer is a bit stuck up and rude and im afraid it will make it even harder on my daughter if i work for one of her classmates parents. My daughter is socially akward and is bigger than most people in her class (boys and girls) and is the oldest in her class so she is made fun of as it is. It also annoyed me that she actually told me to get better clothes, a better haircut, and that i have gray spots (which i never noticed before). What would you do if you were in my place? Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to get an administrative assistant position when you are 62 years old?

Question by lilsheep: Is it possible to get an administrative assistant position when you are 62 years old?
I was pushed out of my last job because of my age. However, I was paid severance pay of 6 weeks; I think this was for my boss to cover himself legally. I have applied for at least 300 jobs and still no job. I was not asked why I was quitting my job, and I did not put the reason in my resignation letter. On my Human Resources form I put the reason as opportunity for learning & advancement. When asked in an interview why I left, I give that reason because in my last conversation with my boss before quitting I reminded him that in my initial interview he said there would be promotion possibilities. He said he did not say that. I don’t know what he is saying when he is called as a reference for me. I did a great job which was reflected on my reviews. I have had at least 15 interviews and have applied for at least 250 jobs, but still no job. I am a very fit 62 year old; 118 lbs, in great shape physically and mentally; continually wanting to learn new things. Please help!!!

Yes, it is possible to still get a job. As you get older, it gets harder but it can still be done. Your skill set is the most important thing.

Why didn’t you go see a lawyer when you felt you were being pushed out of your job because of your age?

Does anyone have any tips for my interview regarding a teaching position tomorrow?

Question by Kyli S: Does anyone have any tips for my interview regarding a teaching position tomorrow?
I have a big interview tomorrow for a third grade teaching position in a small school near my hometown. I am excited, but also nervous as it is my first interview! Does anyone have any tips or sample questions/answers? How would you answer the question about what your weaknesses are? Thanks so much for your help!! :)

I think the most important thing is to just be yourself. If you try to be someone you are not, then that will come through and make you look silly. Also, be honest. No one like to hear “I don’t know” when it comes to questions, but if they ask you a hypothetical and you honestly don’t know what you would do, then say it. This actually happened to me and all I could tell my interviewers was that I would seek the advice of my fellow teachers for help or improvement in that situation. I wanted them to know (and I think I said this) that I knew I had a lot to learn, but I was willing to go the extra mile to do so.

The answer to the weakness question changed for me after I had been teaching for 3 yrs. and moved to another system. I think in the beginning I mentioned that my lack of experience was a weakness, but it was something that I could overcome with time.

Be prepared to answer questions about classroom management; the importance of getting along with colleagues; the importance of parental contact; why they should hire YOU; what a typical day in your class is/would be like; why you want to teach at that specific school.

Remember, you really have to sell youself. If you don’t have confidence in yourself and act like you are the woman for the job, then they won’t they won’t think twice about you.

I got a second interview for a secretary position, what does that mean and what do I do?

Question by little man omg: I got a second interview for a secretary position, what does that mean and what do I do?
In the last interview they mentioned that they would narrow down the search to three candidates for the interview with the employer, and from those three candidates they would hire one staff member. They called and said I was a finalist. Could they already know who they want to hire? And how do I make sure they want to hire me?

There’s no way to know for sure where you stand with other candidates, so take it just as seriously as the first interview. But the fact that you got called back is a very good sign. Good luck!

Your greatest weakness does not make too much sense. You are putting blame on someone else for not giving you opportunities it seems and it doesnt describe your weakness. I dont know if my weakness that i usually use is good or not, but I will say that i can be too nice which will sometimes cause myself to have more work than needed in a job. I will help people when they need it thus making it difficult at times to get more than just my own job done.
If these are written answers, please use complete sentences, and never ever start an answer with “because”. even if it is in person, start by rephrasing the question in your answer. say ” i think i would make a great assest to this company because… i am honest and reliable, etc. tell them you have passion for your jobs and take pride in your work. when they ask about why you applied maybe relate some specific aspects of the job, or they may ask you about that as well. tell them that you think its valuable for everyone to have customer service skills no matter what career path they choose and you think this job will be an excellent building block in your future aspirations.
generally when they want you to tell them about themselves, they want you to actually tell them about hobbies and interests as well as achievements. often its just as boring for the person conducting the interview and to get a feel for a persons personality and help loosen up the feel, you can talk about how you enjoy hiking, swimming, going to the mall, etc.
be prepared to answer a follow up question about working under pressure. relate it to life where you can even make something up and tell them how you had a group project where someone else did not finish their part and you had to quickly and effectively compensate for that loss.
as for being best for the position-enthusiasm is key! smile through the whole interview, tell them that you have always been a people person and genuinely enjoy helping people. tell them you love to learn and that is why you are in college now and pick up easily with new tasks

sorry this is so long, but i have been on lots of interviews and also school functions where they tell you what to say. good luck and i hope you get the job. i work customer service now, and patience is really key. there are always those people who will never be happy no matter what you say or do for them. go by the book and if they are still unhappy ask if they would like to speak to a manager who may be able to assist them better haha. its a bitch, but it pays for school!
