What should I do if I think I might have aspergers?

Question by Ender: What should I do if I think I might have aspergers?
To start, I’m a 15 year old boy. And no, I’m not asking if I should get myself diagnosed or not. I’ve read a bundle of articles about it, and I match almost every characteristic. Even if I DON’T have it, well, I still share the characteristics, and I need help. Well, first of all, I notice I have awkward movements and postures. I can’t really help it. And when it comes to social situations, its like my body just shuts down when I begin talking to a stranger. I’ve already planned what I’ve had to say and how I want to say it, but still, when the time comes, it just doesn’t come out right. I start to shake, studder, speak too fast, too slow, and just feel totally uncomfortable. How can I overcome this?

And it’s not just with strangers. It even happens with my close friends sometimes! They’ll ask me a question, and they’ll will truly be interested in my response, but sometimes, I just can’t help it and just give a half-assed response that makes no sense and just say “I don’t know” to their follow up questions. And I really want to tell them the true answer, but it just doesn’t come out right. And when someone tells ME something? All I do is just pay attention to my body language and what my responses are rather than even listen to what they’re saying. I’m too nervous to even notice what they’re saying! And I’ll just end up saying “cool, nice, cool, yeah” very unnaturally :(

So what I’m asking you is if there is anything I can do. Is there any medications that will, like, calm my nerves when talking to someone? Any practices I should try? Because when I’m in school, I’ll just end up sitting in my seat while everyone else is chatting. I’ll really want to say something but can’t. Or someone will talk to me and I’ll get so nervous I’ll forget everything I originally wanted to say. I’m worried because in the near future, what if I want to get a job? I’ll be so nervous at the interview! And helping people at a cash register or something? How will I ever do that? And even beyond, if I can’t even talk to my friends, how could I possibly talk to a girl to get a girlfriend?

PS: I can communicate via text perfect fine. If I was asking this question to all of you in real life it wouldn’t make sense.
Oh yeah, and 2 more things that might or might not be relevant: Say I want to go jogging. I’ll start, but I’ll just feel so awkward running on the sidewalk in public I just can’t do it. And if I’m on the computer, if someone looks over my shoulder while I’m typing something or watching a video I’ll just instantly freeze and get nervous.

Would you like to see all monarchies abolished & should ALL monarchy & remnants of it should be gone for good?

Question by JohnWayne: Would you like to see all monarchies abolished & should ALL monarchy & remnants of it should be gone for good?
It really is something of a none started to argue that a monarchy can act as a counter-balance within a democracy or that members of a royal family can & do good works. A democracy should by its very nature not need a counter-balance, but should the fear be there within the society then there is a second “house” &/or a judiciary that can act as a control. And as in the French system a president need not be of the same political party as the government & can in extreme circumstances terminate a government & call elections.

As for members of a royal family doing “good things”, so what, pop-stars do “good things” too (which is essentially what today’s royals are now, USELESS), but nobody is ever going to advocate paying them out of taxes. The British royal family are put forward as working for the greater good of the British people, but if they were to disappear some other strata of society would take their place performing the same function at a fraction of the cost. The current crop of young royals in Europe seem to spend most of their time getting into & out scandalous scrapes & as for using Ex-Princess Diana as a “good” example of a member of a royal family that only shows that somebody swallowed all the media hype of the time.

No society today has a need of a monarchy, good government yes, but a monarchy plays no needful part in that.

And as we have reached the 21st Century, since there are few monarchies and even fewer in the traditional sense, many people now view monarchy as an archaic system and should have no place in modern society. And even the democratic constitutional ceremonial monarchies are very fragile and in threat of their survival (with them relying on percentages of support and the citizenry being indifferent toward these monarchies). Because in the 21st century, a political institution, monarchy, which has been around since preliterate man, is on the verge of extinction. In an age of democracy, it is hierarchic; in an age of egalitarianism, it is elitist; in an age of skepticism, it is mystical. So tell me, Do You think it’s time for the remaining monarchies of the World to be abolish and if so, why? Please! I want a straight forward yes or no answer and why. And NOT just that “THEY’RE TRADITION THEY SHOULD BE LEFT ALONE” OR “IT’S UP TO THE PEOPLE” I NEED A BETTER ANSWER THAN THAT!

I really don’t care if such and such monarchy is the most democratic or high on the HDI or got a high percentage of support. That’s not proving your point. We’re talking about THE PEOPLE choosing their leaders INCLUDING the Head-of-State.

I have heard about these nations, and they want republics or don’t care two rats about their royals other than entertainment. And I will be glad the people will one day throw off the remaining shackles of a medieval political structure that is based on the belief that an aquatic tart threw a sword at someones ancestor and somehow that gives them the right to govern people. The concept of governance that is based on strange women lying in ponds distributing swords to men in order to declare themselves a ruler is absurd. Here we are 1500 years later and people still tolerate such nonsense. Power is derived from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

I recommend you read this website. For it debunks the myths.:

The problem with electing a head of state is that you instantly give that person a mandate to do something.

Whether that mandate vests itself to the point of dangerousness as in the case of the United States where on the order of the President, the nation has been sent to multiple wars on numerous occasions, or uselessness in the case of France where ironically, you end up with precisely the same condition that you complain about in Britain.

Assuming Great Britain was to adopt a republican model, then presumably the head of state who would probably be called a President. If there is a President, then what is his relation to the Prime Minister? Do you want him to be more or less powerful, or merely a figurehead?
If the President replaces the Queen, then is the President to be elected by the parliament or by the people? If the President is to be elected by the people, then what sorts of powers do they have? Are they to be defined or a loose sort of nebulous arrangement like the current monarchical system? And if the President is to be elected by the people, does that infer that the President would have a mandate to exercise those as yet undefined powers?

Since the inventor of the modern Republic was France; this grew out of the tyranny associated with the Emperors like Napoleon which for all intents were identical in character to the line of kings they deposed. Currently the French President (Nicolas Sarkozy) is directly elected and holds similar powers to the Queen. The President signs off on legislation and frequently exercises their powers of veto as they see fit. They also have the power to rule on constitutional matters and can refer matters to a referendum.
The problem is that the President is not exactly a respected position. Sarkozy is not necessarily held in high regard with the airs that should come with head of state and is often accused of being incompetent.

Which I’m quite sure bodes well for the idea you have proposed.

(And not once did I mention “tradition”)

How long should I wait to call my job interviewer? What does it mean when…?

Question by lanza1977: How long should I wait to call my job interviewer? What does it mean when…?
(Sorry for the length…thanks for reading! I promise promptly give a best answer!)

A couple weeks ago I did a phone interview with a company and at the end the Human Resources woman asked me for a salary expection (which I gave because I feared if I didn’t I wouldn’t move on in the interview process). Since she said she couldn’t even give me salary range to work with because their policy is not to give one out until they make an offer, my number was based on research I did online on Salary.com for the same position.

The following morning she called me back to invite me for a second interview. The interview went very well. They even had the big boss come down, unexpectedly, to meet with me and ask questions.

Five days later the Human Resources woman (the same one who did the phone interview and who was part of the face to face interview) called me. I thought she was going to make an offer, but instead she told me that my salary expectations were too high. On a good note, however, she also told me that she received very good feedback from the managers and big boss who interviewed me. She did not make an offer (therefore, again she couldn’t give a salary range), and it seemed like she was trying to start negotiations without an offer. So, instead of me telling her a new salary figure, I told her that I am very willing to negotiate because I would really like to work for them. I said that am looking for a compensation package that is motivating, value-based, and in line with the market rate. She then asked me how I could justify my expected increase from my last job and I said that I was moving from a non-profit to the private sector. I couldn’t quite tell if she was satisified with my answers about salary, but she was pleasant and said that another HR person would be caluculating amounts based on some factors (that I don’t know) and that I would hear from them in the “next day or two.” Friday was day 3.

I am nervous because I haven’t heard from them (and it’s now the weekend) and I really want this job. My main concern is that I get compensated fairly (in the past, I have been underemployed and underpaid for my worth) while providing them excellent work.

Is it a bad sign that they didn’t call back by Friday (one day later than they said they would)? How can I negotiate without knowing their terms? Should I give them a call tomorrow or does that seem too desparate?

Thanks so much for any of your suggestions/opinions! =)

Give them time. I bet they are busy sifting through hundreds of applicants (especially because good jobs are so scarce right now). Give them until Thursday or Friday and even then, just call and “check on the progress of your application.”

How long after an interview should I wait to hear from the company before I call them to check on my status?

Question by Pheonix B: How long after an interview should I wait to hear from the company before I call them to check on my status?
Ok, so last Thursday I went to an interview for a company that is literally 10 minutes from my house. It is a perfect location since I go to school at night and I would be able to get there and to school easily. They had an open call for interviews from 1-3pm. There were 2 other people in the waiting room with me as I filled out the application. I interviewed with one HR person and she was very nice, and after going over my resume and my work experience, she said “if you have the time, I would like you to interview with someone else.” I said ok and she took me back to the main work area and handed me off to a second interviewer. At this point, I see one of the people that was in the waiting room with me, leaving already. I interview with the second person and he was nice also. We went over my work history and he had me read a script (this is a customer service position that requires a good speaking voice) and after that, he said that I had a good voice and said “if you have the time, I would like you to interview with my call center supervisor.” I’m like, ok sure. The Call Center Supervisor interviews me and somehow we get on the topic of fantasy football, video games releases and what makes customer service valuable. By this time its almost 3:30pm. We concluded the interview on a great note and he says that he will call all the candidates later to let them know yea or nay. I gave him a strong hand shake and went on my merry way, so all in all, the interview went well, at least I think so. So, I sent off a Thank you note to each of my interviewers and they should have gotten there Tuesday. Wed, I called to follow up but the woman I interviewed with first was out of town but they let me leave her a voice mail. So after all this, my question is, how long do I wait to hear from them or contact again??? Should I follow up on Monday morning? I do not want to seem too persistent or pushy, but I really want this job. It is just about perfect in every way for me, but I feel I have done all I can to try to make myself stand out. I do not want to go overboard, but what is the next course of action? Any suggestions??? All answers appreciated, snide comments will be ignored. I have been homeless, pulled myself out of the gutter only to be out of work for almost 2 years and just want to get back into the work force doing what I do best, customer service, and I have found a company that is not outsourcing its work. I just need some sound advice on getting a job right now. Thanks people….^_^

You sound like the kind of person I would hire in a flash! You already have a good plan. Wait until Monday and then call. They make promises at interviews they have no intention of keeping so do not be too disappointed if you don’t get the job. Sometimes, a gentle push at the right moment does get you the job so call and ask if a decision has been made on hiring for that position. What is the worst that could happen? You don’t have the job now so the worst that could happen is you won’t have th job after the call. But, the best that can happen is that you will be hired so go for it! And best of luck. You sound like a real asset to any company smart enough to hire you.
