Question by Astalder: why wont my router work?
Ok, first off, before answering PLEASE read all the information before giving me answers ive already deduced.
That being said, i have a Linksys router, model WRT160N. about a year or two old. One day my internet began slowing down massively. it would randomly speed up, slow down, and cut out entirely. i did speed tests at random times; the download and upload was always ok. The ping though, would be about 50 when the internet worked, then anywhere from 300 to 3,000 ms! (and just a few seconds after it worked fine.) Of course with such high ping the internet was useless, took forever to load or didn’t at all. There is a computer wired to the router on the LAN, and three computers on the wireless network. i did the speedtest on all the computers, and the exact same thing would happen. (So the computer is not the issue.) The internet works perfectly when i plug it directly into any computer or laptop; so the internet service is not the problem. I adjusted the MTU but it did nothing. So i bought a new linksys router. This one is an E2000. Has the exact same problem. I tried all the tests again, didnt work. I upgraded the firmware, nothing changed. Still the internet cuts in and out, almost always intolerably slow. Every webpage says “waiting for… [website]…” in the bottom corner as it tries to load the page; often failing entirely after a few minutes. Its infuriating. Usually if i unplug everything, or make a setup change to the router, it will work fine for a few minutes, before quickly slowing back down; failing again and cutting out. What is wrong?? i have the problems with both the wireless and the lan parts of the router, so there is no interference or anything either. I live a mile from anyone here anyways. help?
[[The following is a rant of my customer experience with linksys. its just an added bonus to my question and is the reason i had to come to yahoo answers for help.]]
And even more irritating is Linksys’s tech support; ive NEVER dealt with worse service. Ive called them a dozen times. Half the time they make an effort to end the call without solving my problem! (which I still have). i swear they forgot about me yesterday after being on hold 20 min. waiting to be put through to a “senior technician.” 20 mins later the same guy comes back and says hes gonna do the same thing i thought he had been doing, and i wait another 5 minutes, same thing, i said goodbye. They refuse to allow me to connect to people i had been working with so i have to repeat the entire problem over to another foreign guy who takes me through the same redundant tests even after i tell him ive been through it over and over and over and over! AND the stupidest thing! They dont put theyre phone number anywhere on the product! I had to call best buy for their support number! the box gives you and internet site to go to for help. if the P.O.S. router wont let me go online how the **** am i supposed to find help? Anyways yeah, im quite irritated without reliable internet. I just want this fixed!
could it be the isp? but the internet works when its plugged directly in and the router is not involved. is there some detail im unaware of?
ok “john”, you didnt read the question. get outta here.
colanth: its what every speedtest says, so apparently its possible. youre not helping.
cullen: wireless N always worked fine, i want it to again.
jeff: thanks for the advice; MTU is fine though, i went through all that with various technicians. its sounding more and more like an incoming wiring issue?
james, thank you! i tried 192.168.100.1 it says it times out every time. see theres an ethernet-looking cable coming up from the basement. It plugs into a tiny black box about an inch square. this box has a power cord, (plugged into a wall outlet). the other end has another cable that is what i plug into the router. why does it work i plug it right into the comp then? there is no modem box/ switch. its wall to router. we had a switch box, but when we started having the slow internet problem the isp said get rid of the switch, its unnecessary and slowing you down.,. so i took it out. im not sure what to do.

Have you thought about signal interference? Maybe changing the channel on the router? Another radio emitting device that’s causing the interference? As you suspect, it’s not your ISP.
