Question by Crown H: Can you write a short story similar to this illustrating black history must be orignal work winner wins ten po
This is a story of a little boy named Theo who woke up one morning and asked his mother, “Mom, what if there were no Black people in the world?”

Well his mother thought about that for a moment, and then said, “Son, follow me around today and lets just see what it would be like if there were no Black people in the world. Now go get dressed and we will get started.

Theo ran to his room to put on his clothes and shoes. His mother took one look at him and said, “Theo, where are your shoes? Son, I must iron your clothes. Why are they so wrinkled?

When she reached for the ironing board it was no longer there. You see, Sarah Boone, a black woman, invented the ironing board and Jan E. Matzelinger, a black man, invented the shoe lasting machine.

“Oh well,” she said, “please go and do something to your hair.” Theo ran in his room to comb his hair, but the comb was not there. ”

You see, Walter Sammons, a black man, invented the comb (a heated comb that straightens hair)

Theo decided to just brush his hair, but the brush was gone. Lydia O. Newman, a black female, invented the brush.

Well, this was a sight. Theo had no shoes, wrinkled clothes, his hair was a mess, even Mom’s hair was a mess, without the hair care inventions of Madam C. J. Walker! Well, you get the picture.

Mom told Theo, “Let’s do our chores around the house, and then take a trip to the grocery store.”

Theo’s job was to sweep the floor. He swept and swept and swept. When he reached for the dustpan, it was not there. You see, Lloyd P. Ray, a black man, invented the dustpan.

So he swept his pile of dirt over in the corner and left it there. He then decided to mop the floor, but the mop was gone. You see, Thomas W. Stewart, a black man, invented the mop.

Theo yelled to his Mom, “Mom, I’m not having any luck.

“Well son,” she said, “let me finish washing these clothes and we will prepare a list for the grocery store.”

When the wash finished, she went to place the clothes in the dryer but it was not there. You see, George T. Sampson, a black man, invented the clothes dryer.

Mom asked Theo to go get a pencil and some paper to prepare their list for the market. So Theo ran for the paper and pencil but noticed the pencil lead was broken. Well, he was out of luck because John Love, a black man, invented the pencil sharpener.

Mom reached for a pen, but it was not there because William Purvis, black man, invented the fountain pen. As a matter of fact, Lee Burridge invented a typewriting machine, and W. A. Lovette the advanced printing press.

Theo and his mother decided to head out to the market. Well, when Theo opened the door he noticed the grass was as high as he was tall. You see, the lawn mower was invented by John Burr, a black man.

They made their way over to the car, and found that it just wouldn’t go. You see, Richard Spikes, a black man, invented the automatic gearshift and Joseph Gammel invented the supercharge system for internal combustion engines.

They noticed that the few cars that were moving were running into each other and having wrecks because there were no traffic signals. You see, Garrett A. Morgan, a black man invented the traffic light.

Well, it was getting late, so they walked to the market, got their groceries and returned home. Just when they were about to put away the milk, eggs and butter, they noticed the refrigerator was gone. You see John Standard, a black man, patented an improved refrigerator. So they just left the food on the counter.

By this time, Theo noticed he was getting mighty cold. Mom went to turn up the heat; however, Alice Parker, a black female, invented the heating furnace so they didn’t have heat. Even in the summer time they would have been out of luck because Frederick Jones, a black man, invented the air conditioner.

It was almost time for Theo’s father to arrive home. He usually took the bus. But there was no bus, because its precursor was the electric trolley, invented by another black man, Elbert R. Robinson.

He usually took the elevator from his office on the 20th floor, but there was no elevator because Alexander Miles, a black man, invented the elevator.

He also usually dropped off the office mail at a near by mailbox, but it was no longer there because Philip Downing, a black man, invented the letter drop mailbox and William Barry invented the postmarking and canceling machine.

Theo and his mother sat at the kitchen table with their head in their hands. When the father arrived he asked, “Why are you sitting in the dark?” Why? Because Lewis Howard Latimer, a black man, invented the filament within the light bulb.

Theo quickly learned what it would be like if there were no black people in the world. Not to mention if he were ever sick and needed blood. Charles Drew, a black scientist, found a way to preserve and store blood, which led to his starting the world’s first blood bank.

And what if a family member had to have heart surgery. This would not have been possible without Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a black doctor, who performed the first open heart surgery.

So you don’t have to wonder, like Theo, where would we be without Black people in the world. It’s pretty plain to see. It would be very bad!

Could I work at Hollister or Abercrombie?

Question by JayMarie: Could I work at Hollister or Abercrombie?
After talking to my friend about her upcoming interview, I started thinking about myself working there. I’ve always wanted a job in retail because I can’t be around for long periods of times and I’m not too technology smart to work in places like Best Buy and F.Y.E
I have some questions so thanks to anyone who answers!

1. What does it mean to be a model at either of these stores? Is it like modeling the clothes, helping customers, casher, etc?

2. Are all the interviews group interviews? If so, are they nerve racking ( I get nervous easily lol)

3. Can I still apply if I’ve never had any work experience? I know some places are strict about that

4. What is the average day like for a worker at either one of these places?

5. Is there another job besides being a model?

(LAST ONE!)

6. Are they flexiable with work hours and if your going on vacations? (more than likely this will be a job for the summer before I head off to college and I know for a fact I have one two day vacation and one that’s about a week and a couple of days)

Sorry for the question overload! I’ve just never worked anywhere and all of a sudden I’ve become attracted to these two stores. I’m 17 by the way and will be 18 in May so let me know if my age is okay for both places. And, I really hate to ask this question but because of stuff I’ve been hearing I just want to ask to be on the safe side, does my skin color matter? I know in this day and age it shouldn’t but I hear otherwise by peers and family

1. Well, you dress up kinda nice, most likely Hollister clothing to attract customers with new styles.
It can also mean helping customers, cashier, organizing and stacking clothes.

2. Interviews are easy. You need to be open minded, smile and enjoy talking to people. Your attitude determines whether u get the job. Also dress nice and be courteous. There can be group interviews, but also single interviews depending on store and location.
3. yes, you can apply. Many had no work experience, but the right attitude( friendly, open midned, approaching people, smiling, being yourself)
4. Most of the time u get to a certain department or might do it all depending on location.
Some are good with cashiers, then they do only that (numbers). Some are good with stacking clothes in the shelves, taking old clothes down and folding them etc. Then you sweep floor, check inventory, open inventory, put them in shelves, some basic accounting.
5. As mentioned in 4. Models tend to stand and just look good, but it it might be more tiring during nothing.

6. Yes they flexible. Your boss will tell u what is acceptable. But remember u have competition, and whoever fits better will land that job. so if u hve too many vacations, they might just hire someone else. So u have know , u just there for fun or for money . Many workerss there are in for the money, so they work to accomate the store and not themselves.

How does the qualification round at the Olympics work for curling?

Question by Brock: How does the qualification round at the Olympics work for curling?
I’m considering buying tickets to men’s or woman’s qualification round curling. As I understand it, it is a round-robin format and the top 4 teams advance to a playoff elimination format. What I’m wondering is, does every team play during each time session? If not, how many matches do each team play (two pools of 5?). I’m trying to determine what the chances are that Canada will play during any particular session time, and cannot seem to find a schedule (which would be ideal) or format guideline (which would let me at least figure out my chances).

Also, if you know the answer and are confident in it, feel free to repeat it here where I’ve asked the same question (potentially two best answers):

The Olympic qualification round for each gender is a 10 team round robin. Men draws alternate with Women draws. But there are only 4 sheets of ice, so 2 teams have a bye each draw. The draw times are known now, but the placement of the countries in each draw has not yet been made public to my knowledge as of today 6/29/09 (we think this will be out fairly soon). So at the present you have 2 chances out of 10 that your particular country of interest will not be playing in a given draw.

Why do people say “I do” when they get married and then years later divorce rather than work to make it better

Question by Juicy Girl: Why do people say “I do” when they get married and then years later divorce rather than work to make it better
I don’t understand why someone would say I love You, so much so that THEY decide THEY want to spend the rest of THEIR life (FOREVER) with that ONE person and then years down the road have problems (like ALL marriages do) & rather than really working on the issues, just giving up b/c its easier or they find someone else “better”. There is no perfect person. Everyone has problems. Do people really even love each other enough? I love my husband so much that I would go through hell and back (tho I havent yet) to make things right with us unless there was infidelity but most people see “irreconcilable differences” as an answer for “why” they terminated a marriage when in reality its really “I didnt care anymore to put the effort toward fixing whatever problem we had so I am just going to cut my losses”. Why do people get married & think things are going to be all roses & when they aren’t, THAT’S IT. DO SOCIETY A FAVOR AND DON’T REMARRY BECAUSE THE CYCLE ONLY CONTINUES.
Oh & I am not dissing marriage. I love marriage. I just don’t understand why people don’t try hard enough. That’s all I am getting at.
Please don’t comment rudely about my philosophical view of marriage. I really want to know why regarding my question. I didnt post this question to spark anger in anyone about what they think I am “really” saying. Simply stated, I am pro-marriage & pro-happiness & its sad that so many marriages end when they didn’t have too.
If people change thats fine, but people can change & still be married. Noone completely stays the same over the years the same as when they first met but to divorce b/c “they are going in different directions, or they change or it wasn’t working out”, that’s b/c they didnt love the person enough in the beginning to sustain all of life’s changes which includes people. Marriage is growing with someone through those changes and getting through the bumps. Like I said, people don’t wont to really exert the energy it takes to fix things.
1st Time Mamma – Nice to know I am not alone. How awesome to hear someone else echo the same thoughts I have. We are 2 lucky women. And your thoughts were very much appreciated.

I have read that the best way to answer this question is to use a weakness that could also be construed as a strength. Such as being a perfectionist or an organization freak. Good luck.
