If you’re offered a job after an interview, but not very keen & waiting for other offers, how do you respond?

Question by vintageprincess72: If you’re offered a job after an interview, but not very keen & waiting for other offers, how do you respond?
May I know what is an appropriate way to respond, when for example, you went for an interview, got through it, but do not want to give an immediate reply since you are also looking and waiting for other potential job offers?

If you say no, it might be a long wait for the next one to come by. If you say yes, you might miss out on a better opportunity. So what do you do?

It’s a tricky question. Obviously if they have advertised for someone, they want someone to be able to start asap.

If you are really not interested, be honest and say “I appreciate your time, but I don’t think this position is exactly what I am after. Thank you for considering me.”

If you are waiting to hear from somewhere else that you prefer, you could say that you will need to give two weeks notice, and then, if you get the other job, let them know that something has come up and you are unable to accept the position. Thank them again.

Always be polite and never rude, as you may find yourself at the same company a few years down the track.

How do you answer the question “what are your strengths” in an interview if you’re pessimistic about yourself?

Question by eternus: How do you answer the question “what are your strengths” in an interview if you’re pessimistic about yourself?
When I’m asked “what are your weakness” I sometimes accidentally name 3 or 4, but I can’t think of a good strength. I have low self esteem and can’t think of anything from my work experience that was notable. Usually I say something like “well, uh, I got my job done when there were deadlines” but I probably need something better. Yes, I know, confidence is important, you don’t need to tell me that. Can you give examples of what I could say? I could name a technical skill but that may not be a good idea. I’m talking about interviews for IT type jobs.

How long after a job interview do companies contact you if you’re offered the job?

Question by Avatar: How long after a job interview do companies contact you if you’re offered the job?
Is there a certain period of time, like a week, when you haven’t heard back you can assume you didn’t get the job?
This is for a professional position at a top company.

I typically assume 1-2 weeks unless you are told by the hiring manager it will take them up to a month of interviews. I found out I got my job only 5 hours after the interview.

EDIT:

Top company? I strongly encourage you to send a thank you e-mail to the hiring manager if you have not already and FOLLOW-UP within a week. Be smart and be pro-active but not pushy or demanding.
